Forward vs Sage 300 Construction
Sage 300 (Construction & Real Estate, formerly Sage Timberline) is the back-office construction ERP. Forward is the field-side texting layer. They sit at opposite ends of the GC's tech stack and don't compete.
What each one does
Sage 300 Construction & Real Estate is the GC’s back-office system of record. Accounting (AP, AR, GL), payroll, project costing, equipment tracking, fixed assets, property management. The buyer is the GC’s CFO / controller / accounting manager.
Forward is a field-side texting layer for the GC’s field crew. Reads from Procore + Autodesk + OneDrive (the PM stack). The buyer is the GC’s operations leadership + field team.
The dual-stack pattern
Mid-size commercial GCs typically run:
- Sage 300 (or alternative ERP — Vista, Spectrum, etc.) on the back-office side
- Procore + Autodesk + OneDrive on the PM + design side
- Forward as the field-side texting layer over the PM stack
Forward doesn’t touch Sage 300 directly. Sage 300 doesn’t need to touch the field-side texting. Each layer does its job; they don’t compete.
