Spec section search, by text
Specifications are 600 pages your field crew won't open. Forward turns the spec book into a phone number — text the section, get the verbatim passage with the page citation.
Why specs go unread
A typical commercial spec book is 400-800 pages of CSI MasterFormat sections. The detail your field actually needs lives in 4-6 paragraphs somewhere in there. Today the foreman has three options:
- Open the PDF on their phone, pinch-zoom-scroll for 5 minutes.
- Text the PM and wait.
- Guess.
Most projects we’ve sat on, the answer is some mix of option 2 and option 3. Forward replaces all three with option 0: text the question and get the cited passage back.
What Forward does for spec lookups
Forward maintains a full-text index across your project’s spec sections (pulled from Procore Documents or OneDrive). The field user texts the question; the bot pulls the relevant passage, formats it for SMS, and cites the section + page.
Foreman: what does 09 51 13 say about the ceiling tile installation? Forward: 09 51 13 — Acoustical Panel Ceilings Per part 3.4 INSTALLATION: "Install panels with edges resting on grid suspension members except at perimeters where panels shall be cut to fit and supported by hold-down clips or perimeter trim. Panels shall be installed level within 1/8 inch in 12 feet." Source: 09_51_13_acoustical_ceilings.pdf, page 6.
The useful query shapes
- By CSI number — “what does 26 24 16 say about panel labeling”
- By topic + keyword — “spec on fire-rated door hardware”
- By product name — “spec section that covers Sloan Optima sensors”
- By comparison — “what’s the difference between Type A and Type B partitions in this project’s spec”
The substitution-dispute story
Spec lookups are most valuable during substitution disputes. The mech sub shows up with a different model than spec'd. The PM asks Forward what the spec actually says. Forward returns the verbatim passage in seconds; the sub either swaps to spec or submits a substitution request. Decision moves from days to minutes.
How to try it
Text +1 (682) 300-6750 with a spec-section question. The live demo runs against a synthetic commercial project with seeded specs covering most divisions.
Drop your email above to wire your real project’s specs (from Procore Documents or OneDrive). Index runs in ~5 minutes the first time, then refreshes incrementally.
Try Forward right now
Drop your email above for early access — or skip the form and text +1 (682) 300-6750 from your phone. The live demo answers anything you can ask a project manager in plain English — no signup needed.
